What the categories mean
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². The usual adult categories:
- Below 18.5 — underweight
- 18.5–24.9 — healthy weight
- 25–29.9 — overweight
- 30 and above — obese
BMI & weight-loss medication
Providers commonly consider weight-loss injections at a BMI of 30+, or 27+ with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. Your BMI is a starting point, not a decision — read am I eligible? for the full criteria.
The limits of BMI
BMI is a quick screen, not a diagnosis. It doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, or where fat sits, so it can mislabel very muscular people and doesn't capture everything about metabolic health. It's one factor a clinician considers alongside your history, waist measurement and bloods.
